When our Alpha Male passed away, Tinker became the alpha of our family of 5 dogs. All the other 4 dogs were larger than her but they all knew that she was the Alpha Female of the pack and she never let them forget it. LOL.

1. The One-Person Bond

They don’t divide their affection equally. A Chihuahua usually chooses their human — and that decision is permanent. They will follow that person from room to room, sit beside them, and monitor their movements with remarkable dedication.
This isn’t clinginess.
It’s devotion.
Now, that is not to say that they won’t take pets and cooing from other members of the family or visitors. It just means you are their human.
Many owners notice their Chihuahua always knows where they are, even before they stand up. They memorize routines and quickly predict what happens next.
2. The Tiny Guardian
For such a small dog, Chihuahuas have enormous protective instincts.
They are extremely alert and consider themselves responsible for household security. You will know immediately when:
- someone walks past the house
- a car door shuts outside
- a package arrives
- or a suspicious leaf moves in the yard
Chihuahuas are not aggressive by nature — they are serious about their job. In their mind, they are protecting their person.

4. The Blanket Burrower
Nearly every Chihuahua owner recognizes this behavior instantly.
Chihuahuas love warmth. They will burrow under blankets, pillows, or laundry piles and create a tiny nest. Often you won’t even realize they’re there until the blanket moves.
This isn’t just comfort — it’s instinct. Their small size makes warmth and security extremely important to them, and they naturally seek enclosed spaces.
5. The Big Personality
Here’s the most famous of all Chihuahua personality traits:
They are completely unaware they are small.
Chihuahuas confidently challenge dogs ten times their size. I have seen my little Chihuahua running down the street after a Great Dane and she was only 4 pounds. I felt so sorry for that poor fellow. LOL They supervise household activities and express opinions about everything — meal times, bedtime, visitors, and whether you are sitting in the correct chair.
Owners often describe them as:
- dramatic
- expressive
- opinionated
- surprisingly funny
And they’re right.
6. Emotional Awareness
One trait that surprises many people is how emotionally tuned-in Chihuahuas are.
They notice mood changes quickly. Many will come sit quietly beside their owner during a difficult day or rest closer than usual when they sense sadness or stress.
Living with a Chihuahua often feels less like caring for a pet and more like living with a very observant roommate.

Because of their loyalty, attentiveness, and constant presence, Chihuahuas become woven into everyday life. They are there during ordinary moments — mornings, evenings, quiet work hours, and routines.
